Orthodox Jewish counselor on trial in sex abuse case:
NEW YORK (AP) – The abuse went on for nearly three years before the schoolgirl told anyone that her spiritual adviser was molesting her while he was supposed to be mentoring her about her religion, authorities said.
One thing can be said for the Jewish community; they sure stick together. Even if they hate one another they stick together. It must be something in the matzo ball soup they eat. They should be an example to other nationalities and there would be fewer problems in this world.
This Rabbi/counselor 53-year-old Nechemya Weberman has had the entire Jewish community rally behind him. It can be said that they have literally gone “to the Wailing Wall” for him; so far as to taking up a collection for the guys’ defense.
Weberman has pleaded not guilty, and articles in Hasidic newspapers have proclaimed his innocence and begged the community for support. More than 1,000 men showed up for a fundraiser aiming to raise $500,000 for his legal fees and, if he’s convicted and jailed, money for his family. Even if he is convicted they still support his family. That is what I call togetherness.
Child molestation ranks up there with the absolute worst accusation that can be made against someone. Even if the person is found not guilty; that cloud of “maybe” hangs over their head the rest of their life.
The girl that made the accusations has been called a slut and a troublemaker, her family threatened and spat at on the street. That is a shame if the accusations are true. There have been so many cases of sexual abuse to children and rape that have gone unnoticed and unpunished because the accuser and their families are afraid of the backlash.
Either way there is no winner in situations like this. Whether the Rabbi is found guilty or not this young lady will have a rough way to go for the rest of her life. Both she and the Rabbi will have crooked finger pointing at them for a long time to come.
If he is found guilty I hope he is sent to the בית כלא for a good long stretch.
I wonder how many beards will be in the jury pool?
