Chesty Puller was a mans man; the Commandant of the Corps. When Chesty was born the mold was thrown away.
These are some of the quotes the most decorated Marine lived by.
- “Pain is weakness leaving the body!”
- “Our Country won’t go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won’t be any America because some foreign soldier will invade us and take our women and breed a heartier race!”
- “They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can’t get away from us now!”
- “Great. Now we can shoot at those bastards from every direction.”
- “We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them.” – November 1950, during Chosin Reservoir campaign
- “Remember, you are the 1st Marines! Not all the Communists in Hell can overrun you!”
- “Take me to the Brig. I want to see the real Marines.”
- “Alright you bastards, try and shoot me!” (to North Korean forces)
- “Where do you put the bayonet?” (upon seeing a flamethrower for the first time)
- “You don’t hurt ’em if you don’t hit ’em.”
- If I had my choice I would have beer coming out of all the skuttlebutts (drinking fountains) in the Corps
Since the Marine Corps was established in the Tun Tavern in Philly 237 years ago on November 10th; this one of a kind military brother-hood has developed many boys into men and has been a one of a kind fighting unit in the defense of the USA.
There is no such animal as an ex-Marine. All Marines are either active Marines or former-Marines.
Thanks to General Chesty Puller; he set the bar very high for all of the “new comers” to set their sights on. Not many, if any have ever attained the status in the Corps that Chesty did and never will.
One of my favorite quotes from the highly decorated Marine is “”Take me to the Brig. I want to see the real Marines.”
HAPPY 237 th. BIRTHDAY to all the men and women that have served or are serving now.

We didn’t do it alone. We have to remember the Army, Navy, Air-Force and the Coast Guard as well that put their lives on the line in the defense of our country.
