Dutch 737 pilot locked out of cockpit while co-pilot sleeps:
(CNN) — Dutch airline Transavia said it has launched an investigation after a Boeing 737 pilot was locked out of the cockpit and his first officer was later found asleep at the controls.
It took the Dutch airlines five months to launch their investigation into Rip Van Winkle being asleep at the stick. The incident took place in September 2012, when the airliner was en route from Greece to the Netherlands.
The pilot went to choke his chicken and when he returned the cockpit, the door was locked. It was later determined that the co-pilot was asleep at the “wheel”.
Fortunately the pilot and the crew were able to wake up Sleep Beauty’s Daddy, get the door open and land the aircraft safely.
This is a good ending to what could have been a very tragic situation.
What does and doesn’t surprise me, it took so long for the airline to begin its investigation. I will beat a dollar to a Dutch Wooden shoe that the co-pilot continued to fly even after this serious infraction.
Nothing like being proactive when a few hundred lives could be in jeopardy!
Hey Dutch guy; take your finger out of the dike and fly the plane.
