Douglas (Doug) Bandow is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and the author of a number of books on economics and politics. He writes regularly on military non-interventionism.
Doug Bandow, of the libertarian Cato Institute stated “The U.S. is in a position over the last 20, 25 years where we could basically take on any power or group of powers and we win,” Bandow said. “I think that gave rise to hubris, the sense that we could kind of do anything we wanted. I think that’s what we have to deal with as we found out that’s simply not the case.”
Hubris definition: exaggerated pride or self-confidence
This has been the arrogance of the USA going all the way back to Vietnam; over confident, thinking we are invincible and indestructible only to find out the opposite.
The pull out in Vietnam was called a “strategic withdrawal”. In laymen’s terms that means “running away”. As like the wars we are in now, we didn’t belong there.
It is virtually impossible to fight an enemy on their home turf no matter how poor the country is. The snipers and the suicide bombers will always have the advantage.
Who is better off now ? Check this out; Vietnam’s unemployment rate was 2.3% in 2011. Maybe we can learn something from them.
Mind you own business and take care of your own. Before you tell some other country to get their act straightened out, look in your own pantry first.
If the USA would have applied all of the monies to our own economy that we put into wars in the last 60 years, we could have paved the streets in this country with gold plated asphalt but then we would have had to deal with the thieves trying to pull out all the gold chips.
What does it take to get the message across. I hope Mr. Bandow can share some of his insights to the bone headed people in DC.
