UFC Daniel Cormier vs. Frank Mir:
I don’t know how many readers of the Goomba Gazette are UFC fans but I happen to be one.
Of all of the fights I have seen on the UFC; last night’s fight between Mir and Cormier looked like it was fixed to me.
Mir out weighed Cormier by 20 pounds and had a 6″ reach advantage, both being significant advantages in that weight class.
Frank Mir did not come to the dance last night with his fighting shoes on, he came wearing his ballet slippers. It didn’t appear to me that he was taking the fight seriously.
At one time Frank was the best of the best and was virtually unstoppable but last night Cormier gave him a good old shellacking.
It is a common practice that fighter watch the videos of their opponents previous fights to observe their past performances and style. That didn’t seem to be the case with Mir.
A couple of things may have happened:
1. Mir could have underestimated Cormier
2. He wasn’t in good shape – I noticed he was breathing through his mouth in the first round – a distinct sign of being out of shape
3. He is over the hill. With everything we do in life we have to remember Kenny Rogers song “You have to know when to hold and when to fold”.
4. Or last he threw the fight – not a common thing in the UFC
The reason I enjoy watching the brutal sport is; up until now I haven’t seen any indication of fight fixing and the scoring is about 98% fair and accurate; a far cry from boxing.
Chin down, guard up shoulder height, look straight ahead, circle to your opponent’s weak side, stay on your toes but above all be in condition.
A moderately good fighter in good condition most of the time can beat a good fighter in poor condition.
Frank; if you threw the fight get out of the game; if you were in bad condition, shape up; if you are over the hill go out gracefully. You have given the fights fans some fantastic performances up until now.
Rocky Marciano was one of the only smart fighters to get out when he was on top.
We will see if there is a rematch in the cards, if so it may have been fixed.
