The elemenet of surprise

I may be taking the long way around to get my point across but hopefully you will get the message.

It can be that I am too logical of a person but this is one thing of many I could never understand; I only say I don’t.

When I was in the Marine Corps why we were notified 3 weeks in advance that the Inspecting General (IG) was going to visit the base for a “surprise inspection”.

For the benefit of some people in DC, this is the definition of surprise:

sur·prise  (sr-prz)tr.v. sur·prised, sur·pris·ing, sur·pris·es

1. To encounter suddenly or unexpectedly; take or catch unawares.
2. To attack or capture suddenly and without warning.
3. To cause to feel wonder, astonishment, or amazement, as at something unanticipated.
4.

a. To cause (someone) to do or say something unintended.
b. To elicit or detect through surprise.
n.

1. The act of surprising or the condition of being surprised.
2. Something, such as an unexpected encounter, event, or gift, that surprises.

Did the IG really see the day to day operations as they existed if we knew he was coming or did he see an orchestrated display of what the base commander wanted him to see? Get the paint brushes out “you maggots”!

If anyone wants to really see the way things are on a day to day basis or catch someone with their pants down, they come totally unannounced and get the true picture of existing conditions. It is called the element of surprise.

At Camp Lejeune when the IG was doing his “surprise inspection” we ate off of real ceramic dishes and had glass salt and pepper shakers and glass drinking glasses to drink out of. The food always was 50% better when “the man” was coming and  the base was always in tip top condition.

After the IG left the base we went back to eating off of steel trays, plastic cups and ketchup bottles with hole drilled into the tops for salt and pepper shakers. In retrospect who can blame the mess people for serving us the way they did; ceramic dishes cost a lot more to replace when the get busted in a fight that usually happened every-day. Those steel trays were indestructible.

Where is this whole blog going you may ask? If in fact the foolish leaders of the USA are hell bent on attacking Syria, something I disagree with;  why the hell are we giving Syria 6 weeks’ notice to prepare for the attack?

Look at the devastation the Japanese inflicted on Pearl Harbor because they caught the USA with their pants down and totally unprepared. While they were signing peace treaties they were planning their attack. Devious but smart.

With the modern day military mentality, the powers to be do not know how to engage the enemy properly or don’t want to. Every war we fought since Viet Nam was a political war and we did not fight the war the way wars should be fought; to win!

War is not a game of tag or “hide and go seek”, it should be approached to win by any means at the armies disposal.

The military command should be the ones to pull the triggers and leave the politicians out of it. The majority of politicians have never served in the military and wouldn’t know the stock of a rifle from the barrel. This one of the primary reason the USA has gotten its ass handed to them in every war since Viet Nam. It is a total embarrassment to supposedly the most powerful nation in the world.

Our military can be compared to a very large company who’s CEO and other top brass want to be in total control of the company. Why  are supervisors, foremen and competent workers hired; supposedly to run the company.

Lets face it; in big business and the USA military fits in this catagory, most of the higher ups don’t know what is going on; they get all their information from what they read or are told and most of that information is incorrect. Practical experience is the only real way to get one “feet wet”. Like the old saying goes “you have to have been there”!

With the technology the USA has at its disposal it is NEVER necessary to put boots on the ground. We can read the numbers on a license plate from 250 miles above the earth and have “bunker busters” that drill themselves 100 feet into the ground before they blow up. We have the most powerful and sophisticated weapons in the word but are reluctant to use them for political and monetary reasons. The longer wars drag out the more money “the select few” make.

The present commanders and leaders of the military are scared shit-less of the high command in DC. If these generals don’t tow the line and kiss the ass of the DC duds they would find themselves on mess duty before they could say “what the f*** just happened”!

If in fact the USA is going to attack Syria, something I totally disagree with, we should be using the element of surprise.

The IG should never be announced until they can see the stars on his shoulders shining. The element of surprise always brings out the best and the worst in a situation.
