The Nutty Professor

Great Walls of America ‘could stop tornadoes’:

Prof Rongjia Tao, who I will call the “Nutty Professor” suggests that by building three walls 980” high and 100 miles long at the cost of 17 billion dollars, the walls would protect Tornado Alley from future tornadoes. Never happen.

Did the prof ever hear the saying “never mess with Mother Nature” !

This is the Fujita chart on what wind damage will do.

SCALE WIND ESTIMATE *** (MPH) TYPICAL DAMAGE

F0 < 73 Light damage. Some damage to chimneys; branches broken off trees; shallow-rooted trees pushed over; sign boards damaged.

F1 73-112 Moderate damage. Peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos blown off roads.

F2 113-157 Considerable damage. Roofs torn off frame houses; mobile homes demolished; boxcars overturned; large trees snapped or uprooted; light-object missiles generated; cars lifted off ground.

F3 158-206 Severe damage. Roofs and some walls torn off well-constructed houses; trains overturned; most trees in forest uprooted; heavy cars lifted off the ground and thrown.

F4 207-260 Devastating damage. Well-constructed houses leveled; structures with weak foundations blown away some distance; cars thrown and large missiles generated.

F5 261-318 Incredible damage. Strong frame houses leveled off foundations and swept away; automobile-sized missiles fly through the air in excess of 100 meters (109 yds); trees debarked; incredible phenomena will occur.

I really believe that there can not be anything, anywhere that can be built to withstand the forces of nature.  If Mother Nature wants to destroy anything at any-time in her path she is capable of doing it.

My suggestion to the Nutty Professor is to put the 17 billion dollars to better use and start repairing the infrastructure in the country.

I got 6 blow outs and ruined the front end on my car last month from all of the “pot-hole craters” we have in our city.

If there ever was a waste of money, time and effort; it is putting cold patch in a pot holes. The first car or truck that hits it knocks it out of the hole. Absolutely useless and very expensive.

If they are going to go through the time and expense, patch the hole with hot asphalt. Square off the hole, clean out the debris , dry it out and then apply the asphalt, tamp and roll it seal it. It will last 100 times longer.

On second thought. Do you know how many people Obama could put to work putting down cold patch? It is a never ending job and can create 1,000’s of jobs.

The only draw back is; cold patch is like a politicians word, it never sticks!!
