Rice, Hagel defend swift move to rescue Bergdahl, not tell Congress:
This is a very tough call to make. Either release 5 of the most notorious terrorists in the world from Gitmo and make it possible for them to discharge their venomous deeds on the free world in the future or have an sick American prisoner of war stay incarcerated by the enemy.
Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been a prisoner of war in Afghanistan for 5 years and it did not look like any negotiating would enhance his release.
The heart-string of the American people are very sentimental and the most humane thing to do is get this young man back home to Idaho where he belongs. On the other side of the coin was it the most logical exchange to make by releasing 5 of the most hardened criminal terrorists in the world? I say looking at the big picture, it was not a wise choice to make.
This maneuver is going to open the door to all of the terrorists around the world stating that the USA has a “bleeding heart” and is willing to negotiate with terrorists groups in the future. This is going to put every American in jeopardy from here on in; military, civilian, embassy workers and the like will have a target on their backs.
If it were my son being held captive I certainly would want him released but there again, strategically it was not the smart thing to do.
If it is possible to track these 5 terrorists from here on in and record all of their activities, I will be willing to bet that in the long run their release will be determined to be a bad move.
It happens to be a policy of the USA’s government not to negotiate with terrorists and more so, not to use prisoners of war as the “golden carrot”.
Mr. O again by-passed congress when making this decision by using his executive privilege. By law Obama was supposed to obtain their approval.
National Security Adviser Susan Rice, naturally defending for her boss actions made a ridiculous statement saying that the negotiations were conduct with the Afghanistan government rather than the Taliban which is also against the law. The fact of the matter is that the Afghanistan government most probably is inundated with Taliban sympathizers or members of it’s organization.
All in all, I am thrilled for Sgt. Bowe’s release but I think that down the road it will be considered a bad move over-all.
War is a dirty and distasteful business and its consequences are not a pretty thing to deal with. There are always many causalities that come in different forms and those unpleasant/sad conditions are just a part of it.
There is one solution many of our prestigious politicians do not want to deal with; stay out of these place we don’t belong and that will eliminate these types of delicate situations.
