A horse of a different color
Only after the fact does the revelation of what Sgt. Bergdahl’s activities were at the time of his capture by the enemy.
It appears that instead of a solider that, as the press put it, “walked away from his post without his rifle”; it turns out that he is a deserter that walked away from his post deliberately. That is a “Horse of a different color!”
Many of the men that Bergdahl served with including a member of his own platoon claim that he deserted during a time of war and at least 6 of them lost their lives searching for him. In my opinion that sheds an entirely different light on whether our government should have made a trade for him.
I can assure you that the families of these men that were killed in he search are not to happy to learn that their kids lives were lost for a deserter.
Is a loyal, patriotic solider that “accidentally” walked away from his post worth looking for? Absolutely yes. Is a deserter that left his post because he was a coward or the possibility of him joining forces with the enemy worth looking for and risking the lives of his fellow soldiers? Absolutely not.
Sgt. Matt Vierkant one of Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers said “I was pissed off then and I am even more so now with everything going on with this deserter whose selfish act ended up costing the lives of better men”.
Evidently it was known at the time that he was a deserter. The trade was a bad move. People have to be accountable for the actions.
One of the most important elements in the military that makes it a very strong organization is the comradery, cohesiveness, trust and loyalty between the troops watching each-other backs. When that trust is broken by one of the their own it is possibly one of the most disloyal and cowardly act anyone can perpetrate.
If in fact Bergdahl did what he accused of he should be brought up on charges including the responsibility for the 6 men’s deaths that went to look for him as well as for treason and desertion.
Beside the sad fact that he cost people lives in the attempt to “rescue” him, the lives that are going to lost in the future when the 5 terrorists that were traded for him get back into action. There is no doubt that they will.
The Taliban and terrorists groups like them are not going to stop their slaughter of innocent people until every last one of them is dead. By all accounts their numbers are increasing daily by recruiting new people , including some “turn-coat” Americans.
If the Obama administration knew that Bergdahl was a deserter, that is all the more reason there should not have been any trade for his release.
Hopefully the real story of Bergdahal’s activities comes to the surface and if what his fellow soldiers claim, he will pay the ultimate price for his cowardly acts that cost some good men their lives.
I am still trying to figure out his father’s look???
