What a role model; so sorely needed

Pharrell Williams:

are         aree

Yesterday I watched an interview with Pharrell Williams on the Oprah Winfrey program and I was  presently impressed with just how articulate and world-wise this young man is. I was not expecting that.

There is a particular stereotype of black and white entertainers in his age group that have a rebellious and defiant attitude that seems pissed off at the world. This guy is different.

Pharrell is an exception to the rule and is someone that is absolutely a role model for the kids of his race and all the other races to admire and emulate.

My first impression of the man was not favorable maybe because of those ugly hats he wears and assuming he was just another run of the mill rapper. .

As I watched the program the more I was astonished by what he had to say and how he expressed some of his philosophies. It is not an easy thing to go against the majority of public opinion especially as it exists in the black community.

What I was most impressed with was his sincerity and as he puts it the fact of how he has aligned himself entirely with his own unique concept as a being of the human race. Pharrell defined his new philosophies as “The New Black”.  Ophra questioned him as to what The New Black stood for and his answer was stunning.

“The New Black doesn’t blame other races for our issues,” “The New Black dreams and realizes that it’s not pigmentation: it’s a mentality and it’s either going to work for you or its going to work against you. And you’ve got to pick the side you’re going to be on.” Not too bad coming from a rapper or from anyone else for that matter.

In response to Pharrell’s comments that were aired on TV this is an example of the type of mentality he has to deal with from the people that want to keep fanning the racial flames.

After listening to the Oprah,  Writer and blogger Feminista Jones created the Twitter hashtag #whatkindofblackareyou?. Via email, Jones says that while it’s admirable to believe that black people can now transcend race, Pharrell’s comments are ultimately a “slap in the face” to people who do not fit in with his narrow ideas.

Dissenters like  Jones are the ones that are going to keep playing the same old race card like a broken record; the same sad tune over and over.

Hopefully some of the wisdom and polish Pharrell has will rub off on some of the younger kids so they do not have to grow up in misery their parents and grandparents did.

It is all about education and excepting responsibility!!!
