Former fish farmer feeds 1 million kids every school day:

It is totally amazing what Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow has achieved in his attempt to rid the world of hunger for kids. This man is a superstar in his own right.

What most people take for granted in the developed countries around the world; the kids in Machinga, Malawi view as a lifesaver.

Before Magnus came along the kids in villages like Machinga in East Africa went without eating for days at a time.

Magnus’s mission started during a trip in 1992 to the Balkan conflict when he and his brother Fergus witnessed the overwhelming poverty in Medjugorje and decided to try to make a difference.

They organized an appeal for blankets and food to anyone that would listen; the donations began pouring in.  They hand delivered by vehicle all they collected to the needy people in Medjugorje. This was the start of an effort that Magnus could not have conceived would escalate to what it is today.

After their mission was completed in Medjugorje the brothers returned to Scotland and resumed their work as fish farmers. In the meantime their drop off point for donations, their parents’ shed was overflowing with donations from all over the world and they kept coming in.

Fast forwarding to Malawi in 2002. On a trip to that country Magnus witnessed first hand the total devastation there and how the people in that country were starving. He met a young boy whose mother had six children, she was lying on the floor of her hut dying of aids. The scene broke his heart.

Magnus asked the young boy what he hoped for in life, he said: “to have enough to eat and to go to school one day.” The boy’s response struck a chord and the heart of Magnus which resulted in him organizing and working full time with Mary’s Meals to try and stamp out hunger for the kids of the world.

Since then, his efforts have catapulted tremendously and today in 12 countries around the world the kids are benefiting from what Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow started 13 years ago.

How is it that one man’s vision and efforts could produce such extraordinary results? ALL of the major powers in this world should recognize what Magnus has realized and use it as an example. It just goes to show us; when we take the politics out of the equation what kind of positive results can be accomplished.

Last month, Magnus’s program hit a major milestone when Mary’s Meals feed more than 1 million children in one day. That’s 5 million meals every week. What an incredible achievement!!

“It’s a mind-boggling number,” said MacFarlane-Barrow. He still runs the program from a tin shed on his father’s Scottish farm.

The former salmon farmer from Scotland was recognized in 2010 as a Top 10 CNN Hero. At that time his program was feeding 400,000 children a day; today the organization serves 1,000,000 kids, 5 days a week.

Mary’s Meals was founded by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow who comes from a Catholic background. He named his organization in the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

What a legacy for a man to leave on this earth. Magnus deserves a lot more than the title of man of the year. I am sure that anyone with this man’s benevolent characteristic is very humbled by his contribution to the world.
