For extraordinary courage and conspicuous heroism above and beyond the call of duty while in charge of a repair party during an attack on the U.S.S. Neosho by enemy Japanese aerial forces on 7 May 1942. Lacking assistance because of injuries to the other members of his repair party and severely wounded himself, Peterson, with no concern for his own life, closed the bulkhead stop valves and in so doing received additional burns which resulted in his death. His spirit of self-sacrifice and loyalty, characteristic of a fine seaman, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.[2]
Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk was born and raised in New York.
Harvey Milk was a pioneering figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. He was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California, serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk’s activism focused on achieving legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, advocating for their rights in housing, employment, and other areas. He also worked to foster a sense of community and pride among LGBTQ+ people, encouraging them to come out and participate in political and social life.

Not trying to minimize Milk’s contribution to the gay community in the United States; I think naming a building after Milk or honoring his sacrifice to the gay community by erecting a statue in his honor would be more appropriate. But naming a warship in his honor should be reserved for someone who has exceptionally served their military, like Peterson by giving their life in the line of duty.
How are the rest of the Swabbies onboard the ship supposed to feel serving on a ship named ater a gay person???
