Just how clean is the Drew?
Feds: Dr. Drew got $275K from pharmaceutical company to promote anti-depressant’s sex effects, report says:
CNN Headline News host Dr. Drew Pinsky has come under fire for allegedly taking payments from pharmaceutical company Glaxo to talk up the pharmaceutical company’s anti-depressant drug, Wellbutrin, without revealing he was being paid by the company.
It is not against the law for a doctor or a drug company to promote a drug but only if the drug has been approved by the FDA which Wellbutrin isn’t.
As it has been forever, “ignorance of the law is no excuse” but I am sure that the attorneys for the good doctor will come up with plausible argument. Maybe his father slapped him when he was a kid. You know how creative these lawyers are.
Documents claim that the Drew received two payments from the pill pushers totaling $275,000 to tout Wellbutrin soothing effects on sexual libido.
Some companies are “hard learners”. The pharmaceutical giant Glaxo just recently plead guilty to the unlawful promoting of certain drugs and were ordered to pay $3 billion in the largest settlement of health care fraud in U.S. history.
You have to give Dr. Drew credit; he didn’t try to hide that fact that he was breaking the law if he knew he was, he promoted the drug in broad daylight over the airwaves.
We will give him the benefit of the doubt because he seems like a stand up guy. Maybe he didn’t know what he was getting into but Glaxo certainly did. Maybe that 3 billion dollar fine they just paid out was not big enough for them to learn a lesson?
