Based on the 1830 U.S. Federal Census, there were approximately 3,775 free black slaveholders. These individuals owned roughly 12,000 to 13,000 enslaved people, representing a small fraction of the total slave population. A significant number of these owners, particularly in the Upper South, held family members to prevent them from being separated.
