I watched a segment  of one of my favorite programs 60 Minutes last night on how the prisoners in German prisons are treated and what kind of success the authorities have keeping a harmonious atmosphere. As I watched I had mixed feelings and opinions.

One one hand, I think people that are sent to prison are sent there for a good reason because they broke the law and they should be punished for it.

On the other hand, it has been proven through the years that the majority of the people come out of prison worse than when they went in. They get better in the slams at what put them there. They hone their skills.

The violence in American prisons is off the charts. If a convict is not CONNECTED to one of the organizations/gangs they are in some deep shit.

It is no secret that the prisoners run the prisons and the guards try their best to maintain some sort of civility among the troops.  There are constant murders, fights, stabbing, race riots, drug use and prison disorder on a daily basis. It has become the survival of the fittest of the most well connected.

In the video of the German prisons we don’t see that sort of violence. You have to watch the video to believe it. The only thing that is missing on the prison grounds are amusement park rides. I am sure there is some disruption from time to time but not nearly at the level as in the prisons in the Land of Opportunity.

As well as people are treated in German prisons, I wouldn’t doubt if some of them commit a crime purposely just so they can step up in life and get thrown into the slams.

There have been many American wardens and public officials visit the prisons in Germany to try and get an idea what makes their penal system so much different from ours.

In all of their wisdom, there was never mention of it in the segment.  The one thing stood out to me immediately, like trying to squeeze Chris Christie in a size 40 suit jacket; there are no gangs. Gangs are the main culprit in the disorder in American prisons.

2ndly; 99% person of the people in the German prisons are of the same race. That in itself is a very big contributing factor to their success rate.  Whenever two or more races are confined in a contained area there is always going to be dissension between them. All of the machoism comes creeping out of them trying to be The Man. It is all about being the King of the mountain.

Not excuses, just facts. The majority of the people that are in prisons have been born and raised in violent environments. I can’t say they don’t know right from wrong but I will say that their criminal/violent lifestyle is ingrained in their DNA.

Trying to compare an American prison to a German prison is as unlikely as The Donald hooking up with Whoopie Goldberg. It is just an impossibility.

What I would recommend to the prison officials in the USA is;  separate the violent criminals from the non-violent criminals completely, into totally different prisons.

Let’s assume that 25% of the convicts are encourageables, the other 75% are manageable under different surroundings. Separate them so the problem is eliminated before it happens. It is called being proactive.

In the facility where the 75% ers are; the prison system can initiate many different kinds of rehabilitation programs to; # 1 get some form of civility and order in the prisons and # 2 it would be better for the prisoners, if they are ever released, they will have a skill to fall back on instead of going back to their old habits. It is call EDUCATION.

In the long run it will be cheaper and more advantageous for all parties concerned.

For the prison systems to continue to operate under the condition that now exist; they are pissing up a rope.

As I have stated so many time; EDUCATION is the only key to success at all levels for all people. Would it take a few years to organize properly? Absolutely yes but all they have is time. Start today and see some very positive results in a very short amount of time. Ignore the situation; than quit bitching.

The biggest problem we have in this country; they have to take the politics out of running the country at all levels. The first thing some politicians would look at with a suggestion like mine is; how can they make a buck for themselves.

Prison at two different plateaus; one for the most violent and the other for the more manageable.

Commonsense always prevails fellas. Just because it is not your suggestion, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good one.
